Scenes in Avenham Park, Preston, during Safety Week, July 1943. A demonstration of physical exercise and gymnastics is followed by a motorcycle display team doing various stunts. Members of the National Fire Service are seen demonstrating vintage and modern firefighting equipment.

Scenes from Preston's Safety Week, organised by the Accident Prevention Committee. Posters and bus adverts are seen on the streets of Preston and the Transport Minister visits the Lancashire Constabulary's skid pan at Hutton. In Avenham Park there is a march past and dancing display by local children, followed by demonstrations of different causes of road accidents including stepping off a moving bus and playing in the road. Speeches are made by the Mayor and the Minister and the film ends with the Royal Corps of Signals give a demonstration of their work, including the use of pigeons.
 
 
 
COTTON BLOSSOMS

Film about the production of cotton and fabric in Bury and Lancashire during World War II. Includes a brief history of the origins of the industry in Lancashire; cotton being grown, harvested and baled in the USA; and cotton arriving, being sorted, graded and then transported to Bury by rail. Mill processes - including carding, mule and ring spinning, dying and weaving - are all shown in detail, and there are views of the kitchens, boiler room and maintenance department. A lunchtime concert is held in the staff canteen, and the nursery is also seen. An explanation of how waste cotton can be turned into cloth is followed by views of office and clerical staff, and different kinds of cotton products - both war and peacetime - are seen. The film ends with a look to the future and introduces some new innovations, such as modern weaving sheds, automatic looms, a Works Council, first-aid provision and new training methods for recruits. [SAVINGS WEEK AND OTHER WARTIME SCENES]

Posters for a local war savings campaign, followed by a parade and the arrival of 300 evacuees at Wilmslow station in July 1944. Savings week helpers board a train for the Buckingham Palace Garden Party and the Junior Service Corps and Church Lads Brigade compete at a sports day. A torchlit event takes place to change the savings target in October 1945 outside the Rex cinema and teenagers march during a recruitment week for Junior Services. The Air Training Corps, Girls Training Corps and RAF Cadets perform drills and the boy scouts and cubs are seen doing gymnastics. There are posters for a Canada v USA baseball match and for the 1943 ceremony to mark Wilmslow's adoption of HMS Winchelsea, followed by scenes from the baseball match at Pownall College, Wilmslow during Merchant Navy Week. People skating on a frozen lake, baby Brenda sitting outside and a parade featuring the Air Training Corps. There is an outdoor gathering for Allies Day with an appearance from Commander Warwick Bracegirdle. The film ends with a football match, after which St Bartholomew's Prize Band play. The film closes with the men coming together under a tree to sing ‘She’s a Lassie from Lancashire’.

Soldiers serving in the Far East send messages back to their loved ones in Manchester and the surrounding area. The film opens in a small clearing where contributors take turns to speak to the camera before introducing the next caller. Further messages are delivered in front of various buildings (the soldiers’ lodgings?) using different set piece techniques. The film ends with the whole group walking quickly towards and past the camera, waving and saying cheerio.

The Wain family's ration books are seen in the hall of their home, and Judith and Kathryn are seen with baby George Peter in the garden. The family go to the opening of Pole Bank Gardens on 26 August 1944, and Judith and Kathryn try different hats on their baby brother. On VE Day, Kathryn, Judith and Peter are seen in the garden with the day's paper and waving Union Jacks. In August 1945, the family go on holiday to St Anne's, where they are seen playing on the beach and at an open-air swimming pool.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth are seen visiting the people of Warrington on 7th March 1945. School children line the streets and wave flags as the royal cavalcade travels slowly past. The Mayor of Warrington and other civic dignitaries, greet the King and Queen as they get out of the car. The royal party stand on the steps outside the town hall address the crowd. Also features footage of a military parade including shots of a brass band, troops and nurses.
